Apicoectomy is an endodontic surgery to remove the apex of the infected tooth, that is, a small part of the tip of the root. This is a minor procedure, but it must be performed by a qualified endodontic dentist.

Step 1

We can prescribe antibiotics to control the infection. An incision of the gingiva is made vis-à-vis the apex of the tooth to be treated.

Step 2

We perforate the bone to access the apex and remove it.

Step 3

The void left is filled with a biocompatible material and the gum is closed with stitches.

Apicoectomy aims to rid the tooth of infection and then seal its channels to prevent recurrence. Since an infection affecting the root of a tooth may cause severe pain and spread, it is imperative to treat it quickly.

In addition, such endodontic surgery aims to allow the tooth to fulfill its full functions (chewing and speech) and maintaining oral balance. Apicoectomy is in many cases, a last resort intervention to save the tooth from extraction.
