How is caries formed ?
Cavities result from the acidity of the bacteria present in the dental plaque. This acidity attacks the enamel of the tooth. Cavities are the result of poor dental hygiene, insufficient saliva production, smoking, alcohol or certain medications, dental deformities, pregnancy, etc.
The evolution of caries
Decay begins from the outside of the tooth inwards. The dentin, which is the layer under the enamel, is then invested and it is at this stage that a pain can be felt. When caries reaches the dental pulp, the pain can be intense and the stage of dental infection is reached. Finally, caries invades the entire pulp and attacks the nerve causing necrosis of the tooth.
What are the symptoms?
Caries is difficult to detect. It is necessary to wait for a more advanced stage before feeling a pain or a sensitivity. When you have a toothache, cold, heat, pressure, or sugar sensitivity, this is a symptom you should take seriously. Call our dentistry to make an appointment as soon as possible before cavities change further. In cases where decay is discovered very early, we can try to remineralize the tooth.
Caries Care
Dental caries is an infection caused by the proliferation of bacteria on the surface of teeth. When not properly removed, the bacteria gradually attack the different parts of your teeth, causing serious damage. The consequences associated with untreated tooth decay are numerous:
– The irreversible degradation of dental enamel.
– An infection of the dental pulp causing severe pain and may require root canal treatment.
– A dental abscess, that is, an infection at an advanced stage.
– The irreversible loss of the tooth, which will then have to be replaced.
